When Victory Worship released "Safe" last June, it couldn't have come at a more turbulent time for the Philippines. The country had been hit by several earthquakes, and a little over a week before its release, a rebel group stormed the Philippine city of Marawi—a siege that killed many of Marawi's citizens and turned the thriving city into a ghost town. A day after the release of "Safe," a lone gunman attacked the casinos at Resorts World Philippines, an incident that resulted in the deaths of more than thirty people.
"Safe" arrived at the height of all this tension and served as a welcome balm for God's people reeling from the disasters happening around them. Many were encouraged by the song’s inspiration, Psalm 91:1-2, which says, "he who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
In the midst of all the turmoil, it was a blessing to be reminded that God is a refuge, and that those who trust in him will be kept safe. The warm reaction to "Safe"—from its topping the iTunes Philippines chart, to its Top 5 finish on the Spotify Philippines Viral 50—made it clear that God was working in and through the song to speak love, comfort, and peace to his people.
