SONG OF THE MONTH

" NKOSI  YEZULU "

Written by

TK Mabelane, Langa Mbonambi, and Lesego Senwamadi

(We Will Worship Movement, South Africa)

“ ‘Nkosi Yezulu’ was written by TK Mabelane, Langa Mbonambi, and Lesego Senwamadi. The song title means ‘King of Heaven’ in isiZulu.

The song came about while we were doing a soundcheck at Campus Harvest (Central region) back in 2012. The theme of the first session was the sovereignty of God and the simple truth that Christ holds all things together (Col. 1:17). During the soundcheck after this session, with the word fresh in her heart, Lesego (opening vocalist) started singing,

Uyinkosi yezulu, Ungumdali walomhlaba,’

which means, ‘You're the King of Heaven, You're the Creator of this earth.’

Everyone in the band heard her and spontaneously jumped in. In that moment, a song was born.

At a later time whilst crafting the song, we added a verse and chorus in seTswana as we felt the message needed to be heard as broadly as possible. We are grateful for how this song has been received as it is now one of the most sung contemporary Christian songs in Southern Africa.”

- Langa Mbonambi (songwriter, We Will Worship Movement)
